The following guide gives an overview of different plastic materials used in 3D printing.
ABS
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), is a versatile plastic used in various industries, such as Lego bricks, car bodies, household appliances, and roofing. It's flexible, impact-resistant, suitable for desktop 3D printers, and offers a polished surface. However, it's not biodegradable and shrinks in air, so the build platform needs heating during printing.
PLA
Unlike ABS, PLA, or Polylactic Acid, is a biodegradable material made from corn starch. Its low shrinkage in 3D printing requires no heated build plate. The optimal temperature for PLA is between 190°C and 230°C. However, it is difficult to handle due to its high cooling and curing speed and can be damaged or discolored when water is present. Despite its challenges, PLA is commonly used in FDM 3D printers and comes in various colors.
ASA
ASA, also known as acrylonitrile styrene acrylate, has similar properties to ABS but better UV ray resistance. However, it can cause printing complications, so it is recommended to use a hot plate. ASA printing parameters are similar to ABS, but closed enclosures or outdoor use are advised due to styrene emissions. ASA parts are stable and durable.
PET\PET, or Polyethylene Terephthalate, is a semi-rigid, food-contact filament in disposable plastic bottles. It offers good resistance and requires temperatures between 75°C to 90°C for optimal printing results. Available in PETG, PETE, and PETT varieties, PET is 100% recyclable and does not release odor during printing.
Polycarbonate (PC)
Polycarbonate (PC) is a highly resistant material used in technical applications, capable of withstanding high temperatures up to 150°C without deformation. However, it absorbs moisture, affecting performance and compressive strength. PC is valued in additive manufacturing for its strength and transparency, making it ideal for designing optically visible parts, protective screens, or decorative objects.
